Creative background
The "Holy Maid Temple" in the title may actually refer to Chencang (today's east of Baoji City, Shaanxi) and Dashan The Holy Goddess Shrine between the Passes. In the winter of the second year of Emperor Wenzong's reign in the Tang Dynasty (837), Linghu Chu, the military envoy of the Xingyuan Army, died of illness. Li Shangyin returned to Chang'an with the funeral. Passing here, he wrote the poem "Holy Maid Temple".
According to Zhang Caitian's "Yuxi Sheng Chronicle", from the end of the ninth year of Dazhong (855) to the beginning of the tenth year of Dazhong (856) of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, Liu Zhongying, the governor of Dongchuan, was transferred back. During the Han Dynasty, Li Shangyin returned to Chang'an from Zizhou and went back and forth here again. So I wrote this poem to express my feelings, so it was titled "Chong Guo Holy Maiden Shrine".
This poem has always been controversial and is one of the most difficult to decipher among Li Shangyin's poems. Some people think that this poem uses the saint to express his grief about his life experience. Some people think that this is Li Shangyin's use of the topic to express his anger at his failed career. Some people say that this is a poem of nostalgia for Linghu Gui. This poem is intended to compare the lonely and noble Nv Guan to a saint; some people think that this is recalling their love affair with Nv Guan. In short, there are different opinions and no conclusion can be made.
