The Zen master asked: How many classics do you recite a day?
Disciple answered volumes seven, eight and ten. A Case Study of Zen is a book about Zen published by Tianjin Ancient Books Publishing House on August 1 2008, which contains a brief list of Zen departments and sects in China. The writer is Chen Jisheng. Zhao Zhou asked Master Chen's disciples how many classics they read a day. Disciple answered volumes seven, eight and ten. Zhao Zhou said, you can't read the Bible. The disciple asked the master how many classics he read a day. Zhao Zhou only reads one word a day to answer the old monk. The old monk only reads one word a day, which has two meanings. One is to concentrate on one thing, and the other is that there is nothing to see and nothing. Although Buddhist scriptures express ideas or methods in words and languages, truly enlightened people do not need to understand the scriptures word by word, but the highest, lasting and profound enlightenment expressed behind the scriptures is the key point. Therefore, those who don't look at the classics look at the words, and those who look at the classics look at the enlightenment behind the words.
