A symbol of Macao?

One of the symbols of Macao, Sao Paulo archway.

Sao Paulo archway has become one of the symbols of Macao, and it is also a must for tourists to visit Macao.

There is a remnant of a wall on a hill near Daba Street in Macau, which is St. Paul's Church. The whole church was built in 1637, which embodies the combination of European Renaissance architectural style and oriental architectural characteristics and is the largest Catholic church in the East. 1835, St. Paul's church was destroyed by a fire, leaving only the former part. Because its shape is similar to the traditional archway in China, it is named "Dasanba Monument Square".

Exquisite artistic carvings decorate the St. Paul archway with simplicity and elegance. Whether it is the towering cross at the top of the archway, the statue of the infant under the bronze pigeon, or the statue of the Virgin surrounded by angels and flowers, it is full of rich religious atmosphere and gives people beautiful enjoyment.

When visiting the St. Paul archway, we should not only appreciate the majestic front wall, but also carefully browse the exquisite relief on the wall and its significance. Step by step from the top of the archway, there is a cross high above it, and then it is divided into three layers. There is a bronze statue on the wall of each floor, which was cast by Macao's early gun factory. Under the cross is a bronze statue in the shape of a dove. It is said that clouds represent the holy spirit. The statue is surrounded by stone carvings of the sun, moon and stars, symbolizing the moment when the Virgin is pregnant. Under the bronze pigeon is a statue of Jesus' baby, next to which are carved tools for crucifying Jesus. Looking down from the Dabao Castle near the St. Paul archway, you can see the original remains of the whole church and some stone carvings in the square behind.
