There have been several monastic movements in Christian history. What are their causes and effects?
The asceticism of monasticism originated from opposing the gradual secularization of the church and rose in the 3rd and 4th centuries. The earlier potential factor is that before Constantine the Great unified the church and the Roman Empire, the standard of the church was low and the quality of Christians was uneven because of the leniency policy of Christianity. At that time, some people came out, paid attention to spiritual life and retired to the desert. In Greek, "hermit" is "desert" and in Greek "monk" is "loneliness", and these two words become symbols of piety. They keep the vows of poverty, holiness and obedience, pray and work every day, and some even preach the gospel.
