This group of poems, Jihai Miscellaneous Poems, was written in Jihai in the 19th year of Qing Daoguang (1839). This year, the author was 48 years old. He resigned from Beijing and returned to Hangzhou because he hated his official career. Later, he came to see his family. On the way to and from the north and south, he looked at the great rivers and mountains of the motherland and witnessed the people living in dire straits.
