Appreciation of the ancient poem "Book Fan" by Li Zhiyi

After a few years of nothing in the world, I got drunk in Huang Gong’s old wine shop.

After I woke up, I didn’t know that the new moon was covered with flowers and shadows, and beautiful people were supporting me.

---Li Zhiyi

The fan is a tool for repelling heat, and it is also a symbol of the unrestrained life of ancient literati. Therefore, the poems written on fans throughout the history may be lighthearted and humorous, or may be romantic and suave, and most of them are written casually. This kind of poetry is often just like the fan itself, just a small decoration in life. The person who writes it does not pay much attention to it, and the reader does not think deeply about it. This is not the case with this poem by Li Zhiyi. It expresses the interest of life with refreshing and smooth writing, which is fresh and meaningful. It can be regarded as a masterpiece among the book fan poems of the Song Dynasty.

The whole poem uses the word "无事" as its backbone, and the entire description is centered around these two words: The first sentence uses "several years" to describe the time, and "jianghu" to describe the place , in the combination of time and space, creates a more leisurely and comfortable environment for "nothing". At the beginning of the poem, it expresses the atmosphere of leisurely travel and reveals the theme. The second sentence writes about something out of nothing—drunk. Drunk can make people forget everything, so the "nothing" protagonist is even more liberated. Huanggong Jiulong was the name of a restaurant in the Jin Dynasty (円, the mound where the wine jars are placed in the hotel, often refers to the hotel). Ji Kang, Ruan Ji, Wang Rong and others among the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Forest often drank here. The poem uses "Huang Gong's old wine shop" as a metaphor for the unfettered life style of drinkers such as Ji and Ruan, which further complements the "drunk" and naturally further expresses "nothing". "After sleeping" means "being drunk". The third sentence says that the new moon has risen, but the poet still "doesn't know", which once again shows his psychological state of "nothing" in all "things". The "flower shadow" in the last sentence is the most beautiful part of the scene, and the "flower shadow" and "full body" fully express the poet's romantic temperament before being intoxicated by the flowers. What "A Beautiful Woman Helps" highlights is the poet's decadence. This sentence describes the state of drunkenness so vividly that it is admirable.

The first sentence of this poem is a summary of life and sentiments, like the prologue in a drama. It gives the reader a complete impression as a whole. The last three sentences are dedicated to a certain drunkenness, and they are like close-ups in a movie, a vivid reproduction of the content described in the first sentence. This one- and three-part paragraph planning method is novel and unique. Li Zhiyi skillfully used this form to express his feelings extremely smoothly in a short space of twenty-eight words.

Although the whole poem only has seven words and four sentences, the character description is quite successful: it has both the overall image and the details; it describes both the form and the spirit, and you can see the person when you read it. Although the last two sentences only use a few words such as "crescent moon" and "flower shadow" to describe the scene, they are consistent with the image of the protagonist, so the picture formed is very fresh and lifelike - all of which reflect the height reached by the author. Artistic level. Su Shi's postscript to Li Zhiyi's poem said: "For the time being, I will spend the night with good poems, and I will practice Zen every time I find a good place." A good poem like "Book Fan" is enough to make the great poet Su Shi put it down.
