16. Zhi: Write down this preface. Knowledge: Remember. Xia Qing's Shen Lianjun wrote to the emperor, denouncing the Prime Minister's experience as a security guard. The prime minister was very jealous of him for this. Just as the Prime Minister was about to frame him for Luo Zhi's crime, thanks to the kindness and wisdom of the emperor, his punishment was specially reduced and he was only relegated to the cottage. At that time, the reputation of Shen Jun's direct protest spread all over the world. Soon, full of melancholy, Shen Jun moved to the fortress with his family. Just as the enemy in the north invaded the mainland many times, officials at all levels below the commander's office were at a loss, closed barriers, let the enemy come and go freely, and even fired arrows at the enemy to resist. Even after the enemy retreated, they cut off the ears of the soldiers who died in the Central Plains and those who traveled to the countryside as military exploits. Among the people, fathers weep for their sons, wives weep for their husbands, and brothers weep for their younger brothers. Their grievances have nowhere to tell. On the one hand, Shen Jun is indignant at the increasingly lax border defense. On the other hand, he is saddened by the soldiers' wanton killing of people and cheating the country. How many times I cried and lamented for it, so I expressed my anger in my poems and articles, thus expressing my feelings. The articles included in the anthology are all his works.
Shen Jun was respected by the world because he dared to speak out, but his poems were ridiculed and circulated slightly, which shocked everyone. So he tried his best to spread rumors and framed them, and the disaster fell on Shen Jun. After Shen Jun was killed, those who had held important positions in the army and framed Shen Jun together were soon dismissed for their crimes. Soon after, the prime minister who once hated Shen Jun was also dismissed. Yu Jun was a master of Shen Jun and a doctor who made suggestions. Before his death, he collected and arranged several volumes of Shen Jun's works and published them. Shen Jun's son Shen Yijing came to ask me to write a preface for this anthology.
After reading Shen Jun's collected works, I wrote: Isn't a person like Shen Jun the kind of person with lofty aspirations in ancient times? Confucius deleted the Book of Songs. From Xiao Ge, who resented his relatives, to Xiang Bo, who satirized the traitor, all the works of loyal officials, widows, hermits and cynics were incorporated into the "national style" and into the "Xiaoya". There are countless such works. Are these all ancient melodic poems? But the reason why Confucius didn't delete it easily was just to pity those who had been wronged and express their heartfelt wishes. He also said that "these poems are all from true feelings and meet the requirements of etiquette" and "the speaker is innocent and the listener can make reference". I have inspected the works since the Spring and Autumn Annals in turn, and found that Qu Yuan's Li Sao seems to be venting resentment, Wu Zixu's exhortation seems to be threatening, Jia Yi's Recitation is fierce, Ye Shu's Poem seems to be expressing resentment, and Liu Sui's Countermeasures seems to be expressing his outspoken personality. However, collecting and editing The Book of Songs according to the editing principles of Confucius should not be unworthy of being included. Although Mr. Shen has passed away, none of the family officials and doctors have talked about him until today without feeling sad and crying. Alas! If future generations read articles such as Ming Jian and Ugly Discrimination contained in Selected Works, it will completely make the treacherous court official tremble with fear, make the military and horses guarding the border leap forward and arouse the indignation of the public enemy. This is inevitable. Will the officials in charge of collecting poems in the future miss them when they see them? Here, I remember it here with reverence.
As for whether the style of writing is exquisite or not, whether it conforms to the theme of ancient writers, these are not things that can explain Shen Junjie, so I won't discuss it here.
