1. My road to reading
When I look back and think about the road I have traveled over the years, the road to reading alone is enough to make me ashamed. If you think about two or three other ways, you might break out in sweat.
When I was in elementary school, I had no idea about reading. But compared to other children, I still preferred to pick up a book and read it. I don’t know whether I like reading more because I am more introverted, or I am introverted because I like reading. I can’t answer this question of which came first, the chicken or the egg. In my mind, the ones I read the most are probably "Story Club" and martial arts novels. At that time, I was quite strange. I liked to read all books, but I was picky about food and liked story-based content. I was not interested in high-end literary and artistic books. Therefore, I have not read the four major classics so far. , I can only say without shame that I have watched one or two of them, especially "Journey to the West", which I have watched more than once, but it was the one played on TV.
When it comes to martial arts novels, I am really not interested in those works by famous writers, maybe because I have already seen the corresponding film and television works. At that time, the works I read the most were Wu Ji's. I first read his "Legend of Black Panther", and then I thought it was good. I bought all his works. Of course they were street stalls, even though they cost five yuan a piece. But at that time, five yuan seemed to be enough to buy a pound of pork, so I didn’t dare to buy it blatantly, let alone watch it openly. I locked the door and hid in the room and watched on the bed. The worst time was during the winter vacation one year when I watched a few kilograms of "pork".
When I was in about fifth or sixth grade, the school established a library, and the books in it were only the price of a few pigs. But I was still quite interested. I read a lot of books there, and almost all of them were just a superficial taste without asking for a deep understanding. Others were not tasted.
At that time, my composition was quite good in the class. I think it was due to the fact that I read one or two more storytellers and a few more martial arts novels than other students. But just because I read entertainment books, I haven’t become a writer or anything like that now.
I remember that there was a library in the school at that time. I called it the "library", which was really a bit flattering, because its area was so small that I was embarrassed to say that it was only about ten square meters. But in that era when pork was quite expensive, it was pretty good. Due to my studies, I remember just borrowing a few books from that library (it’s more appropriate to call it “room”). During the winter and summer vacations, I almost didn’t read much.
From the first to the third year of high school, due to academic reasons (I admit this is a relatively high-level reason), I almost didn’t read much. That is, flipping through a magazine at random.
During my senior year of high school, I had plenty of time. Compared to ordinary times, the environment of the Holy Lake was like a paradise or a hell. As an aside, I personally prefer a relaxed environment and hate lack of freedom. I had a lot of time at that time, so I watched a lot of "Readers" and "Yilin" when I had nothing to do. Due to the influence of my deskmate at that time (I don’t think it’s flattering to call him a bookworm, it’s almost like looking down on him), I was also obsessed with fantasy novels for a while. On the night after finishing the Chinese language test in the college entrance examination that year, I read the novel in a complicated mood. , fantasy, maybe at that time only fantasy things could fill my empty heart.
If books are the spiritual food of mankind, then my junior high school and high school years can be described as years of hunger and thirst.
Teachers love to coax students to say that college is heaven. At that time, I said in my heart: Teacher, do you want us all to go to heaven? I still prefer the human world to be more human.
But in college, there is indeed a paradise-like life, except for the period before the exam. My freshman year was a year of fun. By the time I was a sophomore, I had watched so many TV dramas at a pace of almost every two days in my freshman year that there were no TV dramas that could attract me anymore, so I felt extremely empty and lonely during that time. So, I had no choice but to devote myself to reading. Then I bought a batch of books on "Trouble", "Walden", "The Three Musketeers", "Romeo and Juliet", "Book of Wisdom", "The Complete Works of Carnegie", "The Law of Attraction", "The Theory of Moral Sentiments", "Goethe's Conversations" , "Jane Eyre. Wuthering Heights. Collection of Pride and Prejudice", "O. Henry's Short Stories. Maupassant's Short Stories. Complete Collection of Chekhov's Short Stories", "How Steel Was Tempered", "A Tale of Two Cities", "War and Peace" ", "Eugénie Grandet", "Notre Dame de Paris, La Traviata, Madame Bovary Collection"). Unfortunately, I only finished 13 books in the end, which is the first 13 books on the book list, and the rest have not yet been read. It has not been opened, and it is now in a box at home.
I also read a few fantasy novels during my college years, but they were not considered real books in the strict sense. The longest one was "The Tomb of the Gods" with more than 3 million words, which was so confusing. I watched it during class, after class, while eating, and even while sleeping. It seemed that I had to watch it for more than ten days before I finished it. I felt that my eyesight immediately dropped by a decimal point.
Children, please do not imitate, cherish your eyesight, and stay away from fantasy!
I graduated as an older young man last year. After I started working, compared to the "paradise life" of university, I had very little free time. But one day my old illness relapsed. I pulled out my phone and searched for "ranking of completed fantasy novels." Although I don't often judge people by their appearance, I often choose books by their names. When I saw a novel with a good name called "The Story of a Mortal's Cultivation of Immortality", I immediately read the first chapter. Hey, it felt good. As I read it, I couldn't control it. Okay, it's another dark day.
After reading "The Story of a Mortal's Cultivation of Immortality", I may feel that reading fantasy novels is a waste of time, so I convince myself, hey, hold on.
Later on, I broke up with Reading for a while. Until March this year, I accidentally learned about a book called "Treat Time as a Friend" (I forgot the specific details), so I took the time to read the book. Since I didn't develop the habit of reading at the time, this book It also took me almost a month to read it, off and on, but I was very inspired. This is the first trigger for the plot to come.
The second incentive. At that time, "World Book Day", whose full name is "World Book and Copyright Day", also translated as "World Book Day", was coming. I saw on Sina Weibo the People's Daily's official Weibo initiative to read for 2 hours a day, and I was very touched. , so on April 23, I started to make a plan to read for 2 hours a day. From then on, it got out of hand and I have persisted until now.
During the few days when I made the plan, I saw the following two passages on Weibo:
(1) If you wake up in the middle of the night and find that you have not had sex for a long time. When you read without feeling any guilt, you must know that you have fallen. It’s not that the book itself is great, but the act of reading means that you are not fully identified with this world and reality. You still have pursuits, you are still struggling, you are still dissatisfied, you are still looking for another possibility, another a way of life. ——Chen Pingyuan
(2). Reading is an important means of acquiring and disseminating knowledge, and it is also an important way of self-cultivation. Through reading, we can cultivate our noble sentiments, cultivate our own noble personality, and nurture our own noble taste; through reading, we can see through many things in the world and reach a state of life where we can travel with the world and share the past and present. ——"Qian Wenzhong Talks about Life"
I have liked reading since I was a child, although it is not a deep level. If there is something more enjoyable, I will give up reading and choose other things, such as watching TV and movies. Therefore, in addition to the small amount of power that the outside world brought to me, I also spent a lot of methods and efforts to enable myself to persevere.
I think there are several reasons why I persisted:
(1) I read good books at the beginning, such as "Time as a Friend", which had a great influence on me. A great inspiration. Since most people are "chasing fame and fortune", I am no exception. When you understand that there is a bigger world in books, you will naturally want to enter that world. When reading a good book, most of it will mention other books with similar themes, which also attracts me to read;
(2) In the process of reading, my mind continues to grow, so I am eager to read more good books and absorb more nutrients;
(3). The most important thing is that I have established my own reading management system to record and analyze my reading situation, which constantly stimulates and encourages me. Go read more books;
(4). At present, there is another very important reason, which is utilitarianism. Because I feel that reading can make me more mature and improve my writing skills, which is beneficial to my career and life.
When I was watching the program "Luo Ji Thinking", Luo Pang summarized several purposes of reading and shared them with you:
(1) Reading can beautify your skin. . There is poetry and calligraphy in the abdomen. Whether you study or not, whether you have self-cultivation or not, will eventually be reflected in your appearance.
(2) Reading will give you a position in life and let you know where you are. Reading can enlarge a person's frame of reference and allow you to base your judgment on a larger framework. It will give you a larger-scale background when making all life choices.
(3) Make your life more directional and accurate.
When I looked back at my reading journey, I realized that my reading amount was pitiful. Compared to those masters such as Qian Zhongshu (his name is too good, he loves reading. I'm thinking whether I should change my name to Peng Zhongshu? Hey, forget it, according to some people's feedback, my current name is still Very nice. ), I read hundreds of books a year, it really makes me wet. I did some calculations myself. Now I am 25 years old. Based on a life span of 70 years, I still have 45 years to read. If I read 100 books a year, I will only read 4,500 books in my life. 4,500 books, compared to the approximately 129,864,880 books in the world, is not an exaggeration. (Data comes from the Internet)
From April 23 to May 31, I read for 74.26 hours a day, which basically completed my goal of "reading 2 hours a day". The goal for June has not been achieved yet, and we are continuing to work hard.
Most of these 70 hours of reading were done on a computer. The software I used is called "iRead Reader". I can't say how powerful this reader is. At that time, I just bought one from Baidu. Its feature is that it can convert e-books in pdf format into ib3 format, so that when reading on the computer, it will have a page-turning effect, and the reading experience is quite good. When I fall in love with a certain book, I search for the pdf format on the Internet, because I feel that the e-book in pdf format is almost a scan of the original book, and the formatting is pretty good.
There is a serious problem with using a computer to read, that is, your eyes will be very tired, and it will also affect your vision in the long run. As for why I didn’t buy paper books, you know, I was short of money. And in my opinion, if you are not a professor, it is better to read e-books. Of course, if a book is particularly good and classic, I will also buy paper books, but there are still relatively few books worth plucking.
Professor Do’s private library, oh, I’m really jealous.
Because of the above issue, after struggling for a few days, I reluctantly gave up my love (yes, my love: money) and spent 833 yuan on May 26 to buy an e-book. . The question I have been struggling with is whether it is worth buying. Later I figured it out because I did some calculations. Assuming that a paper book costs 30 yuan, I only need to read 27 books to earn back the money I invested. I still regret it and why I didn’t buy it earlier! Oh, my God, my eyesight, I hope it doesn't go the opposite way to housing prices.
Let’s get back to the subject. Here I will briefly talk about how I read, and why I only talk about it. Because this involves too many aspects, it can be a separate chapter. Due to limited space, here is just an overview.
Now I usually use my e-book (Amazon kindle paperwhite2) and computer (iRead reader) to read books, and rarely use my mobile phone. There is a very convenient advantage of using Kindle to read books. I installed the "Multi-reading System" on the e-book. Using this system to read books, I can easily synchronize the book excerpts to my "Evernote", so that when I finish reading a book After reading, I can edit my reading notes directly on Evernote. In the past, I typed some classic content of the original book onto the computer word by word, which was very time-consuming and took a lot of effort.
I built my own reading management system on Evernote to classify and count the books I read. I also use special software to count the time I spend reading, which involves time. Management, let’s not mention it for now. You may be wondering why I make reading so complicated and troublesome. I don’t know how other people are, but it is precisely because of this reading management system that I have gradually improved that gives me the motivation and confidence to achieve my own reading 2 every day. hour goal. When I have time in the future, I will share some experiences of the reading management system I built. Of course I know that many people will ignore this matter and have no interest in reading, but I believe that in this big world, there will always be some comrades who agree with me (sensitive people don’t think too much), that is, those who like to read. I hope readers will be even remotely interested in my disdain.
At least when it comes to reading methods, I don’t have the courage to talk about it. My experience is still shallow. Two books are recommended: "How to Read a Book" and "The More Readers".
In the past, I was quite picky about reading, but now that I have a bigger appetite, I don’t mind food so much. Currently I am very interested in books on philosophy, psychology, literature, history, social sciences, etc. In the process of reading, I discovered an interesting thing, that is, the content discussed by many authors is essentially the same, but the soup is changed without changing the medicine. No wonder there is a saying that "a large number of articles in the world are copied." Many of the ideas contained in modern books are simplified versions, or in other words simple versions, of classic books that have been handed down for thousands of years. Even in the past, similar ideas were mentioned by many authors, but they said it differently and used different examples. This also shows that truth is universal, but sometimes we ignore it. But those thinkers and philosophers had brighter eyes and were more eloquent, so they wrote books and established themselves in the world.
I made this discovery when I read "Meditations" in 2011. Some of the ideas in "Meditations" are similar to those in "Essays of Montaigne". So far, I have read the Diamond Sutra, "Aliens" and other books, and I have discovered that some ideas are essentially the same.
The "Diamond Sutra" says: "What the Tathagata says is unacceptable and cannot be explained." The real Dharma must be understood by oneself. The tips in books only serve as a guide, and the road is still there. Gotta go on my own. However, reading more classics means listening to more opinions from hundreds of schools of thought, and you will naturally have a deeper understanding of a truth.
The road to reading is long and long, and I will search up and down, left and right.
Thank you to the poet who gave me rice dumplings to eat for not holding me accountable for drawing on your tragic experiences and coquettish poems many times.
Thank you for your persistence and hard work.
