I feel very honored to attend your graduation ceremony today. I have never graduated from college myself, so today should be the closest day to my graduation ceremony. Today I just want to tell you three true stories in my life. That's all, no long story, just three stories.
The first story is about point connection.
When I was seventeen, I entered the university. At that time, I was naive and chose a school whose tuition was almost as expensive as Stanford University. My adoptive parents are workers and spend everything they have to pay for my college tuition. After studying for six months, I don't see the point of going to school. I don't know what I want to do in my life, and I'm not sure whether the university can help me figure out what I want to do. So I decided to drop out of school. I was still a little drummed when I made this decision, but in retrospect, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. From the moment I dropped out of school, I could stop taking compulsory courses that I was not interested in and start auditing some courses that I thought were more interesting.
At that time, the calligraphy class in my school was probably the best in the country. All the bulletin boards on campus and the words on the labels of every drawer are beautifully written. After dropping out of school, I didn't have to attend classes normally, so I decided to take calligraphy classes and learn how to write well.
At that time, I didn't expect calligraphy to have any practical value in my later life. However, ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, the calligraphy we had learned before suddenly caught my eye. So, we designed all these things into the computer. This is the first computer with such a beautiful text layout. If I hadn't taken such a course by chance in college, Macintosh would never have so many printed fonts or the font size and spacing were reasonable. If I hadn't dropped out of school, I wouldn't have happened to take that calligraphy class. Of course, it is impossible for me to extend the points forward and connect them into a line in college; But looking back now, that line is very clear.
You can't connect the line to the future from the present point. Only when you look back, will you find that these past points have actually drawn that line. Therefore, I believe that every point will be connected sooner or later.
The second story is about likes and dislikes and gains and losses.
Fortunately, I discovered what I like to do when I was very young. Woz and I founded Apple in my parents' garage when I was 20 years old. We work very hard. Ten years later, Apple has grown from the two of us in the garage to a large enterprise with a market value of $2 billion and more than 4,000 employees. The year before last, we just launched our Macintosh computer, and I just turned 30. But then, I was fired. How did you get fired from your company? As Apple grew bigger and bigger, we hired a person who I thought was very talented to manage the company with me. In the first year or so, everything went well. However, later, our views on the future of the company began to differ, and finally turned against each other. At this time, the board of directors stood on his side, so I left the company at the age of 30, which caused a lot of trouble in the city. I lost my focus all my adult life, which made me exhausted.
I really don't know what to do for months. The failure was so noisy that I even thought about fleeing from Silicon Valley. But gradually, I began to have an idea-I still love everything I have done. These events at Apple have not changed this at all. So I decided to start from scratch.
Although I didn't realize it at the time, it turned out that being fired from Apple was the best thing in my life. Although the future is uncertain, the ease of starting from scratch has replaced the heaviness of maintaining success. This allowed me to enter one of the most creative periods in my life.
In the NeXT five years, I started a company called Next and a company called Pixar. I also fell in love with an amazing woman and later married her. Pixar released the world's first computer-generated cartoon toy story, and it is now the most successful animation studio in the world. After Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed in NeXT became the core of Apple's re-emergence. Laurena and I have also established a happy family.
I'm sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. This is bitter medicine, but I think bitter medicine is good for the disease. Sometimes life will hit you, but don't lose heart. I firmly believe that the only motivation that keeps me going is that I love what I do. Therefore, whether you choose a lover or a job, you should know what you like. Work will be a big part of life, and the only way to make yourself truly satisfied is to do what you think is meaningful; The only way to do meaningful work is to love your work. If you haven't found what you like, keep looking and don't make a decision in a hurry. Just as everything you do is related to your feelings, once you find something you like, your feelings will tell you.
My third story is about death.

Since then, 33 years have passed, and every morning I look in the mirror and ask myself, "If today is the last day of my life, will I still do what I want to do today?" If my answer is "no" for days on end, I know it's time for me to change.
I was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago. At 7: 30 that morning, I had a scan, and the results clearly showed that there was a tumor on my pancreas, but I didn't even know what a pancreas was at that time! The doctor told me that it can almost be diagnosed as an incurable malignant tumor and can live for three to six months at most.
I've been thinking about the diagnosis all day In the evening, I had a biopsy. They put an endoscope down my throat and into my intestines, and took some cell tissue from the pancreatic tumor with a needle. At that time, I used anesthetic, and later my wife who was with me told me that the doctor cried after looking at the cells under the microscope. It turns out that this is a rare malignant tumor that can be cured by surgery. I had an operation and I'm fine now.
This is the closest I have come to death, and I hope it will be the closest in the next few decades. With this experience, now I can talk to you more realistically about death, that is: no one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to go to heaven. However, death is our common destination and no one can get rid of it. We are doomed to die, because death may be the best invention of life. It promotes the life of a new generation. Now, you are new, but in the near future, you will get old and be eliminated.
Your time is limited, so don't live according to others' wishes, it's a waste of time. Don't let others' opinions drown out your own voice. The most important thing is to have the courage to follow your feelings and intuition. Anyway, feelings and intuition already know what kind of person you want to be, and nothing else matters.
