Sanyou Cave is one of the four major national scenic spots, located in Xiling District, Yichang City. However, many people are interested in the name "Sanyou Cave", but they don't know why three people came to visit this cave. Let me first introduce the origin of the name Sanyou Cave.
1. The origin of the name of Sanyou Cave
The name of Sanyou Cave has two allusions. Three poets in the Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi, Bai Xingjian and Yuan Zhen, swam through this cave together and were called the "First Three Tours"; in the Song Dynasty, Su Xun, Su Shi and Su Che's father and son also swam through the cave together, known as the "Latter Three Tours".

Sanyou Cave
The three caves are located on the cliff and are connected by a plank road. The cave is about 20 meters wide, more than 10 meters high and 30 meters deep. There are three stalactites in the cave. There are inscriptions from past dynasties inside the cave, and poems from past dynasties are engraved on the cliff outside the cave. The hanging stone on the top of the cave makes a sound called "Heaven"; the raised stone on the ground makes a stamping sound called "ground drum".
The beautiful scenery of the three caves was once called "illusion" by the ancients. Most of the people who passed by Yiling (Yichang) in the past dynasties visited here and wrote and expressed their opinions in various characters such as capital letters, official script, calligraphy, cursive script, poetry, murals, inscriptions, etc., and carved them on the stone walls. To this day, there are still more than 40 wall inscriptions and inscriptions inside and outside the cave, such as the inscription by Ouyang Xiu in the Song Dynasty and the "Preface to Sanyou Cave" re-engraved in the Ming Dynasty, leaving behind precious cultural and historical materials.
Zhiting
Xiting was built in the Song Dynasty, when the writer Ouyang Xiu was demoted to the county magistrate of Yichang. After Zhu Qingji, the governor of Zhouxia, built this pavilion, he specially commissioned Ouyang Xiu to write an inscription for the pavilion, namely "Xiazhou Zhixi Pavilion", making it one of the three scenic spots in Zhouxia. Due to war and other man-made factors, the ancient buildings at Miaozui in Xiba, Yichang, were destroyed, including Xi Zhi Pavilion, Xi Zhi Pavilion "plaque" and Donghu County's exquisite 80-character couplets with seats. The newly built Xi's Pavilion has red cornices and columns, three-fold double cornices, glass bricks, and bluestone carved railings. It is 18 meters high, with layered pavilions and pavilions. There are spiral stairs in the building. Ouyang Xiu's "Xiazhou to Xiting" "Notes" and dozens of ancient and modern poems and paintings are erected in the museum.
Lu Youquan
According to local chronicles, the patriotic poet Lu You of the Song Dynasty visited Sanyou Cave via Yiling. He found a clear spring above Xilao River and took the water to make tea, which was fragrant and sweet. After appreciating it, he left a poem: "It's not that the famous spring is not fragrant." This is the origin of Lu Youquan.
Xiakou Junlei
Ancient military fortress: built in the Southern and Northern Dynasties and extended to the Six Dynasties. It is also the only ancient military relic in Xiakou. Ancient arrowheads and bricks from the Eastern Han Dynasty were unearthed in this military fortress. The ancient military fortress was erected at the mouth of the gorge, and you have a panoramic view of the Xiling Gorge, allowing you to feel the majesty of the ancient pass.
Seal Stone Garden
The seal stone collects the seals of 127 world-renowned Chinese painters, including Wu Zuoren, Guan Shanyue, and Wang Chaowen. Take the core stone from under the Three Gorges Dam and carve it carefully. The styles are different and natural, enlarging the common seals of painters into stone sculptures.
Three Gorges Strange Stone Museum
The largest strange stone museum in the Three Gorges region, it has a collection of 231 Three Gorges strange stones, including "the majestic military spirit, the shining Buddha's light, Zhaojun's departure from the fortress, the beautiful scenery of the mountains and rivers, etc.".
Inscriptions on the stele wall
Since the Song Dynasty, celebrities such as Bai Juyi, Yuan Zhen, Bai Xingjian, Ouyang Xiu, Su Xun, Su Shi, Su Che, Huang Tingjian and Lu You have visited Sanyou Cave. As well as officials who served in Yiling, they made more than 100 wall carvings and inscriptions. Nearly 60 pieces have been preserved and discovered, including Kai, Li, Seal, Xing and Cao. For example, Lu Wei's official script wall carvings in the Qing Dynasty, and the giant wall carvings "Zhan Hezhang Rock" written in small seal script by Guiying, the eldest daughter of Chen Jiancheng, said: "The high rock in the palm is not stubborn, the chemical industry has a treasure-shaped mountain, it opens up chaos, and shows the life and death of the world."
