Translation of Vernacular Poems in Viewing the Sea

Go east, climb Jieshi Mountain and enjoy the boundless sea. How vast the sea is, and the mountain island stands high on the seaside. Trees are lush with herbs, and the autumn wind makes a sad sound, and the sea is rough.

The movement of the sun and the moon seems to emanate from this vast ocean. The Milky Way galaxy is full of stars, as if they were born from this vast ocean. I am very happy, so I use this poem to express my inner ambition.

See the boundless ocean

Han Dynasty: Cao Cao

On the east coast, climb Jieshi Mountain to see the vast sea.

The sea is so vast that the islands stand high on the sea.

Trees and paraquat are very lush. Autumn wind makes trees make sad sounds, and the sea is surging.

The movement of the sun and the moon seems to come from the vast ocean.

A trip to the sun and the moon, if unexpected;

Han is a talented star, if you take him by surprise.

I am glad to use this poem to express my inner desire.

Creation background

At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, social contradictions intensified, warlords became independent and peasants revolted, which formed a chaotic situation of mutual strategy. Yuan Shao's sons, Yuan Shang, colluded with Wu Huan and Ta Dun, constantly invading the border and plundering people's property.

Wuhuan (also known as Wuwan) is a nomadic people living in the north. According to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Wuwan is a descendant of Donghu people and was destroyed by Xiongnu Khan in the early Han Dynasty. Some of the remaining tribes fled to Xianbei Mountain, which was named Xianbei in the name of the mountain, while others fled to 50,000 Mountain, which was also named after the mountain. This is black pill.

In order to completely solve the problem of black pill in three counties, remove the remnants of Yuan and calm the situation in the north, Cao Cao decided to levy the black pill department in three counties in the north. "Before the soldiers and horses moved, food and grass came first" was an important strategy to win the ancient war. Cao Cao knows that there are many huge lakes in Hebei Plain, because the Yellow River has changed its course many times. "The horses and chariots are too shallow to carry the boat."

Therefore, before going to Wuwan in three counties, Cao Cao accepted Dong Zhao's suggestion, requisitioned more than one million people from Hebei, and dug two north-south waterways: Quanzhou Canal and Pinglu Canal, which was a disparaging term for the enemy, and Pinglu Canal was a canal opened by powerful aggressors. Pinglu Canal is the prototype of Cangzhou section of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.

In the 11th year of Jian 'an (AD 206), Pinglu Canal was dug. The canal flows from Guangwucheng, Raoyang County, Hebei Province (now west of Gudian Village, Raoyang County) to Cangzhou (now Baodi County, Tianjin) via Hutuo River. There is also a saying that the Pinglu Canal goes north from the wooden door in Qingxian County to Tianjin, and the wooden door township was called Pinglu City in ancient times, hence the name Pinglu Canal.

In the second year (AD 207), in May, 53-year-old Cao Cao led 200,000 troops and thousands of chariots to the north of Wuhuan. An Indiana Jones captured Liucheng (now southwest of Chaoyang, Liaoning), beheaded the leader of Wuhuan, Tatun, and attacked Wuhuan in three counties, eliminating Yuan Dynasty forces such as Yuan Shao's son and Yuan Shang who fled there, unifying the north of China and ending the separatist regime in the north of China.

In September of that year, Cao Cao took classes from Liucheng. At this time, the coastal highway is feasible. Cao Cao rode up the mountain through Jieshi (near Qinhuangdao today) and looked out over the Bohai Sea. He recalled his great contribution to the world and was in high spirits. He wrote a famous poem "Looking at the Sea", expressing his joy after his victory.
