Liu Baiyu (1916.9.2—) Biography Main works Beijing native. He entered Beiping No. 1 Middle School in 1930 and was admitted to the Chinese Department of Peking University in 1934. In March 1936, he published his first novel "Ice Sky" in "Literature", describing the tragic fate of an old soldier in the vast snow. In 1937, he published his first short story collection "On the Prairie". The works at this time mainly reflected social issues. He went to Yan'an in 1938, joined the Communist Party of China in the same year, and participated in the literary and art troupe. He traveled to various travel bases in North China and wrote short stories such as "Chronicles of Longyan Village" that reflected the anti-Japanese military and civilian struggle life. In 1944, he went to Chongqing and served as the supplement editor of Xinhua Daily. In 1946, he went to the Northeast Liberated Area and served as a reporter with the army during the Liberation War. He wrote many excellent battlefield communications. The short stories "Political Commissar" and "The Three Invincible Warriors" and the novella "Fire Ahead" are his important military-themed works. In 1950, he participated in the production of "The Victory of the Chinese People", a film reflecting the War of Liberation, which won the Stalin Prize for Literature.
During the period of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, he went to the Korean battlefield to interview and write. He wrote a collection of communications reports, "North Korea Advances in the Flames of War," and a collection of short stories, "The Happiness of Fighting," etc. The correspondence and reportage he wrote during the war were full of high passion and hearty articles, which had great influence at the time.
After 1955, he successively served as vice chairman of the Chinese Writers Association, deputy minister of the Ministry of Culture, and minister of the Cultural Department of the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army. He wrote many poems praising the socialist revolution and construction, and his greatest achievements were in prose. His prose is full of enthusiasm and has a strong sense of the times. His words are vigorous and fresh, and have a unique style. The most famous work, "Three Days on the Yangtze River", praises the beautiful mountains and rivers of the motherland and expresses the author's revolutionary feelings of loving life. It has received many praises. After the Gang of Four was crushed, in addition to continuing to write prose works such as "Red October", he revised and completed the long reportage "The Sea - A Note on Comrade Zhu De" that had been written in the early 1940s. In recent years, he published a new novel "The Second Sun".
He is currently a member of the Presidium of the Chinese Writers Association.
