Li Shangyin (about 813-about 858), a native of western Henan, was born in Hanoi, Huaizhou (now Qinyang County, Henan Province). Kai Cheng is a scholar, and once served as county magistrate, secretary lang and judge of Dongchuan Province. Due to the influence of the party struggle between Niu (monk and child) and Li (Deyu), he was constantly excluded, leading to lifelong poverty. Li Shangyin was an important poet in the late Tang Dynasty. His poems mainly express his sadness and frustration when he was hurt, but they also criticize the current politics and satirize the present with the ancient. He is good at using symbols, metaphors, hints, foil and other techniques to form a graceful and hazy style, and sometimes it becomes obscure.

The ancients used lotus flowers to describe many virtues of gentlemen, and borrowed the characteristics of lotus flowers to compare and praise the outstanding independent character of noble and refined, not flattering the world. But this poem praises the "naive" quality of the lotus leaf, in order to praise the virtue of sincerity but not hypocrisy. Ren Naizhen is not only about flowers, but also about people. The last two sentences go deep into the "innocence" of lotus. The red flowers and green leaves of the lotus flower reflect each other. This poem praises the rise and fall of the lotus, but actually expresses its desire for bosom friends and political support.
This poem is simple in language, obvious in meaning, straightforward in expression and lively in rhythm, which is different from the subtle gracefulness of many of Li Shangyin's poems and reflects the diversity of his poetic style.
