Where did China's Zodiac come from? Why are there no cats?

China's Zodiac culture has existed since the pre-Qin period, and some scholars believe that this culture originated from the totem worship of the ancients. As for the reason why cats are not included in the zodiac, it is because there was no such animal as cats in the pre-Qin period. In 1970s and 1980s, two bamboo slips of Qin Dynasty were unearthed in China, which recorded the culture related to the zodiac. Before these bamboo slips were born, many scholars thought that China's zodiac signs were actually imported from abroad.

Scholars who hold this view believe that the origin of the zodiac is ancient Babylon? Zodiac killer. Later, with the rise of the Silk Road in the Western Han Dynasty, this foreign culture was slowly introduced into China through business activities and personnel exchanges, and then the zodiac was derived. However, with the above-mentioned Qin bamboo slips unearthed, this view was overthrown. Although the zodiac system was formed in the pre-Qin period, it is slightly different from the zodiac we are familiar with now. Later, after a period of development, it was the same as it is now in the Eastern Han Dynasty.

Since these zodiac signs are not foreign, they were created by the ancients themselves. Most scholars believe that the ancient people's inspiration for creating the zodiac mainly comes from the worship of animals. In the backward primitive society, the ancients were always full of awe of nature, so they regarded an animal or plant as a protector. After the ancients chose the patron saint, they would make it into a totem to seek protection. Different tribes often chose different patron saints. Like Fujian in the south, the ancients living here believed in snake totem because there were many snakes and insects.

At that time, there were many animals for the ancients to choose from, and twelve of them finally stood out and were included in the zodiac. Cats that originated in China were imported from abroad in the Han Dynasty, so they were not included in the Zodiac, which was formed as early as the pre-Qin period. Apart from the saying that China has a zodiac sign, countries like Viet Nam and India also have a zodiac culture, but they are not completely consistent with China.
