What is Yuefu?

Yuefu is an ancient musical organ, which was established by the imperial court since the Qin Dynasty to manage music. The name of the Qin Dynasty was adopted in the Han Dynasty. Yuefu collects and sorts out local folk music, arranges and composes music, and performs. The significance of Yuefu is reflected in the following four aspects:

1. Organize literati to create poems and songs for the court. The music used by Yuefu when he was in charge of the emperor and the court was not traditional ancient music, but a popular tune dominated by Chuyin. The first Yuefu poem sung with Chu voice was chapter 17 of Anshifang Song. In addition, Dafeng Pavilion sang with Chu Yin when offering sacrifices to Peigongyuan Temple, which was also managed by Yuefu organs.

2. Collect local folk songs, arrange and make music scores. Yuefu widely collects ballads from all over the country. Many folk songs are sung in Yuefu and handed down. The Yuefu poems created by literati are no longer limited to Song Like's banquet in Anshifang, but also sung during the festival, and the status of Yuefu poems is obviously improved.

3. Use music to express the phenomenon of social life. The sufferings of ordinary people and the luxurious Yuefu poems of a wealthy family are included in the harmony songs, forming two contrasting pictures. One side is hungry and cold, struggling on the death line; On the one hand, it is luxury, and I don't know if there is sadness in the world. These two groups of Yuefu poems were originally arranged together with great contingency, and their objective effect was to guide readers to appreciate the bipolar world of disparity between the rich and the poor and uneven bitterness and happiness.

4. Cultivate a new poetic genre. Western Han Yuefu widely collected all kinds of ballads, among which there must be a considerable proportion of five-character poems. These five-character poems are different from the traditional four-character poems in form, which aroused the strong interest of scholars and imitated them personally. Therefore, more literati five-character poems began to appear in the Eastern Han Dynasty. From the five-character poems of the Western Han Dynasty to the five-character poems of Yuefu, and then to the five-character poems of literati, this is the basic track of the development of early five-character poems.
