Basic explanation
"Respect" means being serious and earnest, and it also means doing things seriously to avoid making mistakes; "Fear" means "cautious, cautious, and serious."
Awe refers to the feeling of fear, respect and surprise when faced with authoritative, solemn or lofty things.
Confucius said, "A gentleman has three fears: fear of destiny, fear of adults and fear of the words of saints." (The Analects of Confucius Ji Shi).
Zhu Dui said: "However, there is something about respect, just like the fear of words. Just sitting together, deaf and blind, it's not easy at all. Only by converging body and mind, leading an honest and clean life and not indulging, is respect. " (Zhuzi School 12, Stop).
Rational spirit
People who may advocate awe feel that if everyone believes in something and a certain value, then society will be better. They regard awe as a shortcut, because it is much easier to establish awe than to cultivate a person's rational thinking, especially in China, where there is no tradition of rational thinking, it is easy for a person to be afraid of something, and it is difficult for him to have the spirit of doubt and verification. With awe, or * * * with awe, it may really get better, but it may also go in another direction.
More importantly, it is not necessary to build a modern society. Rational thinking is the basic concept of modern people. This can't be built by awe, it can only be done step by step, and there is no shortcut. In the process of modernization, human beings are becoming more and more secular, surreal things have not completely disappeared, and the role of mysterious forces is gradually being removed.
It was also Max Weber who put forward another crucial concept, "disenchantment". He said, "As long as people want to know, he can know at any time. In principle, there is no mysterious and inestimable force at work. People can master everything through calculation, which means disenchantment to the world. People no longer have to resort to magic to control or pray for gods like barbarians who believe in the existence of this mysterious power.
Technology and computing are playing such a role, which means intelligence more clearly than anything else. "Rational thinking can be traced back to the ancient Greek philosophical tradition. It was not carried forward until the beginning of the Enlightenment. After the long and dark Middle Ages in the West, with the development of natural science, people's understanding of nature gradually deepened, which led to thinking about social science. Many things that were originally thought to be true have been overthrown, and people no longer blindly believe them, but ask why.
Typical theories, such as rationality proposed by Max Weber, divide rationality into value rationality and instrumental rationality. Instrumental rationality is the result of the evolution and development of enlightenment spirit, science and technology and rationality itself.
