After reading French writer Jules Verne's novel A Charming Journey to China, Gao Luopei was fascinated by China culture, and began to wear China clothes, sleep on a hard bed, and wanted to come from China. From 65438 to 0943, Gao Luopei served as the First Secretary of the Dutch Embassy in Chongqing, and married a famous wife of China, Shui Shifang. Her father Shui is an envoy in St. Petersburg and the mayor of Tianjin, and her grandfather Zhang Zhidong is a famous minister of Westernization. With the contacts with celebrities such as Shen and Qi Baishi, the infatuation with China culture has reached a fanatical level. Drinking tea, playing chess, playing the piano, reciting poems, painting, practicing calligraphy, managing printing, writing novels ... just like a celebrity. He followed the example of the ancients and was named Gao Luopei. There are other nicknames such as "Laughing and Forgetting" and "Knowing Too". No matter which country you live in, the pattern of Chinese-style study in Gao Luopei remains unchanged, with books on all four walls, Four Treasures of the Study on the desk and a bed inlaid with rosewood, which is called "full of books and leaves". He named his study Jiyizhai, Zunmingge and Youcunzhai at will.
Gao Luopei is quite accomplished in China ancient music, and in his early years, he studied with Ye Shimeng, a master of guqin. When I was in Chongqing, Yu Youren and Feng Yuxiang and I joined the "Qin Tianshe" and learned from each other. Gao Luopei wrote a book, Qindao, which was widely quoted. He carefully translated the music score of Guqin, all kinds of works about Qin Xue, and materials related to Guqin in literature and art into English, and added notes. In 1940, the title is "the" in English.
Knowledge of Chinese Pipa: An article on Qin ideology.
Gao Luopei is a collector and connoisseur of oriental cultural relics. Such as guqin, calligraphy and painting, porcelain, painting spectrum, piano spectrum, Buddha statue and so on. Are the objects of his collection; Liulichang in Beiping, Kanda District in Tokyo, and the old bookstore in London are all places where he lingers. According to William, the eldest son, the whole family chewed hard bread for months to buy a Guanyin statue. Gao Luopei has his own ideas about collecting antiques. He doesn't buy rare treasures, preferring broken antiques. He said: a guqin with peeling paint can also play the song of mountains and rivers; Fragments of famous porcelain can also be regarded as solid powder Longquan. He appreciated and studied calligraphy and painting, and devoted himself to compiling the Collection of Calligraphy and Painting Appreciation for more than ten years. The book is nearly 600 pages, with 160 illustrations. There are 42 Chinese and Japanese patterns at the end of the book. In 1958, the English title is "Chinese"
The art of painting in the eyes of connoisseurs. "
Gao Luopei's works, such as style, are most widely circulated by his unique ancient detective novels in China. He was deeply impressed by Di Renjie, the protagonist in the case-solving novel Wu Zetian's Four Mysteries. He thinks that although there are no modern technical means such as fingerprints and photography, his meticulous investigation, the spirit of solving crimes and the meticulous analysis and reasoning of criminal psychology are no less than Conan Doyle's famous detective novel Sherlock Holmes. Gao Luopei saw the popularity of western detective stories, and many people even thought that there were no such works except English, American, German and French. In order to prevent China's case-solving novelists from being wronged in the grave, Gao Luopei (Chinese Preface) devoted himself to the English translation of Four Mysteries of Wu Zetian, which was deeply loved by readers after publication. He wants more. He wrote Chinese detective novels such as Murder in the Bell Tower and Murder in the Labyrinth with Di Renjie as the leading role, and drew his own illustrations by single-line drawing. The Di Gong Case series has been published in more than 20 volumes, translated into more than a dozen languages, and some have even been made into movies. What's more, he retranslated it into Chinese in the genre of "I want to know what will happen next" and said it should be a standard book. Gao Luopei has a good knowledge of the legal system in the Tang Dynasty, and many plots in the Di Gong case series are well-founded, which is quite different from the nonsense of some contemporary "joke" writers. China ancient detective stories handed down by a sinologist show Gao Luopei's unique style.
After World War II, Gao Luopei went to Japan again. In order to publish the Japanese version of Murder in the Labyrinth, the publishing house insisted on taking naked women as the cover, while Gao Luopei only used China ancient prints, and the two sides were deadlocked. He wrote to the antique dealer and asked if there was such a painting. I didn't expect that the antique shop in Kyoto sold twenty-four colorful woodcuts of the Ming Dynasty, Hua Ying Jin, which was published in 1991. Gao Luopei had studied China's prints, but now he happened to see the sculptor's exquisite collection of secret scripts, which aroused his interest in China's traditional social life. I began to collect ancient books from the early Han Dynasty to the late Ming Dynasty, especially Taoist sexual intercourse and poems and novels describing the relationship between men and women in previous dynasties, and got many lost books and manuscripts from the people. Gao Luopei thinks: "This kind of book is so popular now that it can't be buried even if it is stolen." After sorting out and collating, it was compiled into "Textual Research on Secret Plays", which was published in 195 1 in Tokyo. It was made into three huge volumes with a thread-bound book and antique brocade toothpicks. After the publication of this book, it attracted the attention of many sinologists, letters were returned, and materials accumulated more and more. 196 1 year, he wrote a big book "Sexial" in English.
Ancient life
China, Chinese name is China Ancient Indoor Examination, published in Holland. Gao Luopei's motivation to study China's ancient sexology is explained in the preface of "Research on Secret Play": "Westerners visited China in the189th century to observe the customs. Books are not easy to start with. Asking people is also secretive. I thought China's room would be filthy and unsightly. This leads to lies and misunderstandings. Even the exotic habits of China's atria and ventricles are all told by westerners in this world. It is generally ridiculous. In books and magazines. Tan finished eating. There are countless examples of this insult to Chinese civilization. A disciple hid. Slander. No matter who is guilty. "(pay attention to the old saying) shows that he has taken great pains for Chinese civilization. After more than ten years of research on sex, Gao Luopei concluded that sexual life in ancient China was natural and normal. Although there is sexual intercourse, it is precisely because China people have been working hard to study the gender balance for two thousand years that they have always maintained a strong vitality and enabled the Chinese nation to continue to renew.
Gao Luopei also kept gibbons at home, and made detailed ecological records. He also wrote a book "Examination of Gibbons", with records of apes singing at the back of the book. Even professional zoologists, how many people can keep animals at home for ecological records? It can be seen that Gao Luopei is serious about his research. When this book went to press in 1967, Gao Luopei returned to Tokyo for a holiday from three missionary groups. He contracted cancer and died in The Hague at the age of 57. He kept practicing calligraphy before his death and finished the last gibbon exam before his death.
Gao Luopei's books and manuscripts are collected in the library of Leidenham College in the Netherlands. William, the eldest son, specializes in East Asian art, and Ke Shaoqiuji is the curator of Leiden Anthropology Museum.
Some people think that the classification of modern disciplines is getting finer and finer, and it is rare for modern scholars to cross a wide range of disciplines like Leonardo da Vinci. Gao Luopei's evidence is untrue. In fact, "magic is magic", and there is no big mountain barrier between industries.
According to the traditional view, Gao Luopei's sinology belongs to the "alternative". He was not satisfied with looking for chapters and sentences in classical Chinese prose, but contacted the society, explored China culture in folk customs, collected information, conducted research and introduced it to the world. He combined China civilization with western thoughts and wrote many masterpieces handed down from generation to generation. The so-called "the other" is actually the expansion of sinology.
Mrs. Navy Fang said of Gao Luopei: "He is not a foreigner! He hasn't stopped practicing calligraphy for a day since we realized that he was dying. He likes Sichuan food best. He is really from China. " I am proud and ashamed of this "China" Gao Luopei. Pride: Chinese civilization is profound and profound, which makes him completely impressed and immersed in it for life; Shame: As a native of China, I am far behind him in studying China culture and promoting Chinese civilization.
Gao Luopei loves China, but he hasn't forgotten his motherland. He signed his autograph and said, "Holland laughed and forgot that Gao Luopei knew about the platform and the piano room." . If people in temperament are like this, who is not suitable?
