"Attempts" was published in 1920. ***Part 3. The first volume is mostly works derived from old poetry, while the second and third volumes make attempts in the use of free verse and reform of phonological rhythm. It is the first collection of vernacular poetry in the history of modern literature.
The works either curse the dark rule of feudal warlords and the hypocrisy of the old ethics, or express the liberation of individuality and aggressive spirit, or praise the sanctity of labor. Hu Shi is undoubtedly the first vernacular poet.
