How to treat the innovation of vernacular poetry during the May 4th Movement?

During the May 4th Movement, the poetic revolution became an important hope of the New Enlightenment. The new poetry with vernacular as the language carrier adapts to the needs of political change and is also obviously innovative.

Based on the determination to completely break away from the tradition of classical poetry, the new poetry movement began with the "great liberation of poetic style", which broke the situation that classical poetry dominated the world, brought about changes in creative concepts, and blew a fresh and free wind to the literary world. This movement started with the "experiment" of Hu Shi's vernacular poems, and then experienced the response and participation of Kang, Yu Pingbo, Liu Dabai, Liu Bannong, Wang Jingzhi and Bing Xin, which made the May 4th new poems undergo a revolutionary process from language form to content. The innovation of language form is manifested in writing poems in the spoken language of the people and the language closer to the spoken language of the people; Formally, it broke the rigid fixed rhythm and created a new form of new poetry that was creative and close to the masses, which was remarkable at that time. The New Book of Songs experienced a "language revolution" and established the authentic status of vernacular Chinese. Because we advocate writing poems in vernacular Chinese, we can express our feelings freely without thinking too much about the requirements of poetic rhythm, which provides favorable conditions for poets to put aside the shackles of old-style poems and create with an open mind, and the May 4th New Culture Movement also provides them with such a free creative environment. Because most people could understand and accept the vernacular at that time, poetry was no longer the patent of a few people, and ordinary people could also try to write poems in vernacular. This makes the free-style vernacular poetry deeply loved by the public in the New Culture Movement, and almost everyone writes poetry. The poetry revolution movement played a certain fighting role in the May 4th New Culture Movement. With the development of the whole revolutionary movement, it vividly and powerfully reflects the spirit of new democracy in the May 4th era, that is, the revolutionary spirit of thorough and uncompromising anti-imperialism and anti-feudalism. In a word, new poetry is the product of the May 4th revolutionary movement, and only in the May 4th revolutionary movement can such a brand-new poem belonging to the masses be produced, which is different from any previous historical era.
