His appearance, especially his profound description of urban life in Montevideo, changed the situation that local literature dominated the world and was regarded as a major turning point in the history of modern Uruguayan literature. In his early years, he wrote about the moral hypocrisy and cynicism of the Montevideo middle class, and about their homesickness, humiliation and fear of death when they were in exile. In his later years, he continued to expose the darkness of dictatorship with painful memories, while not forgetting to ridicule the new generation of materialism.
Benedetti's works published in China include The Breakup of Love (translated by Liu Ying), Poems of Mario Benedetti, and Let's Fall into Seduction: Selected Works of Mario Benedetti. His short stories are also published in domestic literary magazines.
