Reading Tang Poetry 8: Liu Yuxi's "Sick Tree"

Xie Zhen's "Four Poems": Poems are mainly good sentences. Sentence is a unit of language to express complete meaning, while good sentence is a successful embodiment of language application. Therefore, the ancients all attached importance to the creation of good sentences. There has been a phenomenon of seeing only good sentences and not poems.

The poem "Qian Fan passes by the sinking boat, and Wan Muchun is ahead of the sick tree" is a vivid example. Now people are explaining two poems, often thinking that they have a strong will, but in fact it is far from the case. Judging from Liu Yuxi's original intention, these two poems are very pessimistic and sad. "Sick tree" and "sinking boat" are all self-references.

The first one states the experience of being demoted, and the second one is nostalgic. In the 14th year of Yuanhe (819), Liu Zongyuan died at the age of 47. Liu and Liu have a very good relationship. They have been "in the same boat for twenty years". Therefore, he is "nostalgic for singing and smelling the flute." "Wen Di Fu" refers to "Thinking of the Old Fu", which was written by Xiang Xiu when he heard his neighbor's flute in the former residence of his best friend Ji Kang on his way to Luoyang. It is full of sadness and sadness. Liu Yuxi used this event to express his nostalgia for his dead friend and to write his sentimental feelings with the word "empty arms". "Going to the hometown is like a rotten person". After 23 years, it is beyond recognition to return to the DPRK again. As described in the Book of Stories, Kelly, a Jin native, went into the mountains to watch chess. Although he only spent a short time, his axe handle was rotten. Only after he returned to his hometown did he find that all his contemporaries were dead. Liu Yuxi used such an allusion to include all the vicissitudes of life and his own destruction after his return from nine banishments.

It is precisely because of the foreshadowing that the Third Joint has a sigh of "Qian Fan on the side of the sinking boat, Wan Muchun in front of the sick tree". These two sentences mean: I am like sinking a boat, and Qian Fan has passed by on the side of my sinking boat; I am like that sick tree again, and the other trees around me are lush. A careful appreciation of these two poems is a kind of lonely feeling of self-injury and backwardness. There are many such feelings in Liu Yuxi's demoted poems, so it is obviously not in line with the original intention of the poem to interpret them as enterprising and positive feelings. However, from another perspective, these two poems do contain a dialectical philosophy. If we go beyond the author's life background for the time being, just look at the metaphorical meaning of the poem, which contains more meanings: although a boat sank, there was Qian Fan competing on the side of the sunken boat; In front of the sick tree, the lush landscape and vitality of thousands of trees are displayed. After reading this sentence, people will feel an inevitable development law of things' metabolism, and they should treat their own difficulties dialectically. These two sentences melt poetry, painting and philosophy into a furnace, showing the meaningful sense and charm of the image.

When writing a poem, you should not indulge in the carving of words too much, and pursue superficial put in order or floweriness too much, which will cover up your temperament and the meaning. Words are only symbols of language and emotion, and the words that can express meaning and emotion most appropriately and deeply are the best words.
