Song Of The Master And Boatswain

Wystan Hugh Auden

At Dirty Dick's and Sloppy Joe's

We drank our liquor straight

p>

Some went upstairs with Margery

And some

alas

with Kate;

And o by o like cat and mouse

The homeless played at keeping house.

There Wealthy Meg

the Sailor's Friend

And Marion

< p> cow-eyed

Opened their arms to me but I

Refused to step inside;

I was not looking for a cage

< p> In which to mope my old age.

The nightingales are sobbing in

The orchards of our mothers

And hearts that we broke long ago

p>

Have long been breaking others;

Tears are round

the sea is deep:

Roll them overboard and sleep.

The Ballad of the Captain and the Sailor

Westan Hugh Auden

Joe's shop is filthy, Dick's shop is filthy,

We drink Don't pick the place;

Holding Maggie's arm and Katie's arm,

Everyone went upstairs to form pairs;

Like a greedy cat or a mouse,

The homeless man tastes home.

Sailor's friend, the generous Meg,

Big eyes, Miss Marlene,

I refuse to go into their room,

< p> Even though they opened their arms to me;

I don’t want to look for a cage,

I don’t want to sit in that cell forever.

The nightingales in mothers' orchards,

All sing mournfully;

Our hearts have been broken long ago,

Still Always let others break their hearts;

The teardrops are round and the sea is deep,

The tears are shed in the water and I fall into sleep.
