I. Introduction by Huang Tingjian
Huang Tingjian, whose real name is Lu Zhi, is a rich man in Fenning, Hongzhou (now xiushui county, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province). He was a famous writer and calligrapher in the Northern Song Dynasty. He is the founder of Jiangxi Poetry School, and he is also called "one ancestor and three schools" with Du Fu, Chen. They, Chao and Qin Guan all studied under Su Shi, and they are collectively called "Su Men Four Bachelor". He was as famous as Su Shi before his death and was called "Su Huang" by the world. He is the author of Valley Ci, and Huang Tingjian's calligraphy is unique and is one of the "Song Sijia".
Second, Huang Tingjian's calligraphy
On the basis of inheriting the tradition and learning the calligraphy of predecessors, Huang Tingjian boldly innovated and became unique, forming his own style. Huang Tingjian's calligraphy is mainly characterized by running script and cursive script. In Huang Tingjian's running script, most characters are vertical, but the middle palace of each character ("middle palace" is the center) seems to have a center, and other strokes radiate from the center.
This "broken" and "radial" glyph structure has broken through the square and even the appearance that has been popular since the Jin and Tang Dynasties. With the help of his stippling, he not only grasped the center of gravity, but also exaggerated some strokes, which made his calligraphy show the spirit of elegance and boldness.
Huang Tingjian's big-character running script is concise and powerful, and its structure is peculiar. Almost every word has a long painting with great personality, which stretches out in frustration and forms a brand-new method of drawing English in Guanzhong Palace, which has a great influence on later generations.
