He learned how to read with his grandfather at the age of four. At the age of eight, he studied with his maternal grandfather and loved painting. In 1889, he studied poetry and painting from Hu Qinyuan and Chen Shaofan, and changed his focus to portrait painting. In the 1892s, people painted landscapes, flowers, birds and ladies, and learned how to mount paintings from Xiao Xiangye. In 1894, he copied the calligraphy and paintings of famous people and organized the Longshan Poetry Society with his friends. The following year, Luoshan Poetry Society was established.
