Beginners of Calligraphy —— Thoughts on Teacher Huang Jian's Tutorial

Learning calligraphy started with a whim to copy Su Shi's poems. Later, after copying an article "Bao Hui Tang Ji", I found that I had copied it for two hours and didn't realize that time flew. I felt a kind of inner peace beyond words, so I began to think, why not learn calligraphy? In this way, I began to finish another hobby that I didn't finish when I was a child: calligraphy.

I found a teacher named Huang Jian while searching for the knowledge of learning calligraphy. He made and put a series of calligraphy learning courses designed by himself on the Internet, with clear hierarchy, detailed contents, simple explanations and quotations. Other calligraphy courses, from the beginning, talk about brushwork, and talk about how to write and how to write horizontally. Huang Jian, on the other hand, began to learn calligraphy and strokes from the concept of calligraphy, to the choice of Four Treasures of the Study, and then to the concept and decomposition of brush strokes. Although I have been impatient many times in the process of watching the tutorial, I often think again, why don't you start telling me how to write a good word? But when I calmed down, I suddenly realized that patiently understanding these details can deepen my understanding of calligraphy.

For example, in Four Treasures of the Study's explanation, Mr. Huang Jian gave a lecture in three sections, which is about 1.5 hours. He talked about the history of the pen, the making process of the pen, the purchase and daily maintenance, and the courseware was illustrated with pictures and texts. It feels like not only a calligraphy class, but also a trip to a museum. In other online materials, what I can see is a general classification: wolf hair, sheep hair and doubled both brush, and what kind of pen should beginners choose? Just start writing, just take a dip. I also want to be a beginner. Whether my writing is good or not has little to do with the pen. A good pen is good. I'll wait until I write well. Think that choosing a good pen is a sign of vanity.

such an idea was overthrown after listening to the class. I was very ashamed when I saw the brush in my hand and studied it carefully. Although you can't blame the pen for poor handwriting, it doesn't mean that you are qualified to have a careless attitude towards the pen on your hand. Has the brush been like this since ancient times? No, the pens used by the ancients are also constantly changing. There was a historical period when the pen holder was very thin and could stand on the hair. Now that the pen tube is thick, it is not good to do so. Ancient calligraphers, however, also had their own obsession with pens in their hands, and many of them made their own pens. The change from pen holder to pen tube, the details of these production processes also reflect the changes of the times. Wei Dan's pen has two hearts and three cents, which is much more complicated than the current scattered pen. Now Taobao can get brushes everywhere, but it can't afford such a complicated process. But I also believe that people can regain some traditions when they pursue again.

For another example, there are many places that I have to sigh in the process of making a brush, such as choosing one hair in a hundred, which makes me very ashamed. A sheep's hair may only be useful for a few taels. And all I can think about is the price. The hair should be smoothed, the roots should be cut, and then the algae glue should be applied ... and so on. Such a detailed introduction makes me feel that a pen with a few pieces and a dozen pieces is really not that simple, and it is not taken for granted that it is like this.

as a three-minute enthusiast who has not yet reached the boundary and is equipped first, I realize that it is too superficial for me to pay that little attention to pens in the past. I'll look at my washed and dried pen again. Ah, I found all kinds of mistakes. I am very ashamed that I didn't treat my pen well, didn't wash it clean, soaked the ink in the pen too high, and didn't moisten it with clean water before using it. The seriousness of tools is also a pursuit of good quality, and we often say the importance of basic work. Solid foundation, probably just don't let go of this detail.

I often smile when watching video tutorials. For example, when talking about writing, when talking about the point that the pen tube should be perpendicular to the paper, he not only quoted ancient works, but also found various handicrafts or paintings depicting people's posture in the writing process. For example, a small pottery figurine cultural relic, or a white painting happens to have a gesture of writing by a woman. This kind of data collection must always pay attention to the content related to calligraphy in peacetime, and will collect relevant information as soon as it is seen. I admire this attitude from the bottom of my heart. For another example, the current Sanzhuo pen is not as tightly tied as Wei Dan's pen, and the possibility of hair loss will be higher. He also suggested to floss and process it himself. Such a small detail is not a fantasy for no reason, but well-founded and simple.

of course, I occasionally see a little fidgety. The teacher's speech speed is a bit slow, and often I have finished watching the subtitles, and the teacher's words have not finished. Sometimes I am particularly impatient, and I will pull the progress bar. But in this way, I will accidentally miss some important details and have to jump back. It's really haste makes waste.

reflecting on this, I think the problem is more about myself. Speaking slowly is like leaving blank space, which allows me to think a little about what I said. Every time I focus on one or two concepts, I will speak slowly and spread it out. After listening to it once, I will remember it clearly. Unconsciously, I remember a lot of calligraphy expressions, which I didn't understand or just gave up understanding after I quickly browsed many calligraphy websites. If I hadn't seen the video of Mr. Huang Jian, I think I would still skip these concepts that I don't understand at a glance. For example, if I were in the past, I would definitely take a detour when I saw these concepts.

I also secretly skipped the previous content and watched a later learning video. I hope I can steal a step about the front adjustment. As a result, I found that I was really greedy. In later videos, the teacher often quotes some calligraphy concepts mentioned before. Once I haven't learned this concept, I don't know what he really wants to say. Finally, as long as you continue to watch the video learning step by step and in the order provided by the teacher.

The above are some recent experiences in learning calligraphy. Learning is an irreversible process. After tomorrow, maybe some feelings and thoughts will disappear. Today, please write down a little experience to encourage yourself.
