Graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Beijing Art Institute in 1961. He is good at freehand brushwork, flowers and birds, landscapes, and is also good at calligraphy and seal cutting. The traditional Chinese painting "Mighty Spring Breeze" won the Outstanding Work Award in the first "Chinese Talent Cup" Painting and Calligraphy Grand Prix. "White Peony" won the third prize in the first national "Harvest Cup" competition. "Spring Comes Fragrant" won the second prize of Chinese painting at the International Friendship Exhibition of Various Countries, and was toured in Los Angeles, the United States, and Paris, France. "Wind Flower" won the Best Honor Award in the National "Jingtingshan Cup" Calligraphy and Painting Competition. "Pile of Brocades" was selected into the 7th National Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary Chinese Flowers, Birds and Flowers. "National Flower" won the Excellent Work Award at the Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting by Chinese Contemporary Famous Masters. Works such as "Seeking Pictures" and "Qingqu Qingqu in the Lotus Pond" have been published in dozens of newspapers and periodicals such as "People's Daily" and "Shanxi Daily". In 1990, he held a large-scale personal calligraphy and painting exhibition in Taiyuan, which was well received by provincial and municipal TV stations, radio stations, and newspapers. The papers include "Poetry and Painting", "On Painting Bamboo", "Appreciation of Famous Artists' Art Works", "Selected Freehand Flower and Bird Paintings", and "Mr. Pan Tianshou Talks about Creation". The entries were included in the "Dictionary of Famous Chinese Modern Artists" and "Xuehai Mingshi". His monographs include "Collection of Xu Zhen's Paintings and Calligraphy" and "Collection of Xu Zhen's Paintings".
