Introduction of poppy in Flanders
Flemish red poppy (English name: Flanders Field Poppy) belongs to Papaveraceae and is an annual or biennial herb flower. Most of them are clustered, about 80 cm high, with hairy stems and leaves and milky white stems. Flowers are solitary at the top of the scape, with 4 to double petals, shiny paper, big red or blood red, very delicate and charming. The flowering period is April-May. I like living in wheat fields and spreading their tiny seeds widely. Dormant seeds in the soil grow best after ploughing. During and after the First World War, the battlefield bombed by artillery was covered with red poppies. John Mc Crae, a medical officer from Canada, wrote the famous poem In Flanders on the battlefield. After that, the red poppy became a memorial flower for the armistice day of World War I, and European and American countries have maintained and continued the habit of using this flower to commemorate the fallen soldiers.
