The Distribution of Scholars in Song Dynasty

The geographical distribution of literati in Song Dynasty was mainly in the Yellow River basin and the Yangtze River basin. Comparatively speaking, the southern literati are more densely distributed, which is reflected in the economic center of gravity moving south and the northern people moving south, the prosperity of urban handicrafts and commercial economy in Song Dynasty, the invention of movable type printing, the improvement of imperial examination system and the rise of civic culture, all of which have led to a large number of literati.
