Life is precious,
Love is more expensive;
If it's for freedom,
You can throw both!
(translated by Bai Mang)
Freedom and Love is an immortal masterpiece of Hungarian patriotic poet petofi in the19th century. This is a passionate ode to freedom and a sonorous oath. It opens up the poet's lofty mind to us and shows the poet's crystal clear mind.
How important freedom is to a poet! For freedom, the poet resolutely sacrificed his precious life and love. Why? Let's look for the answer from his life and career pursuit.
Petofi was born in a poor butcher family. Before graduating from high school, he went out to make a living alone and lived a wandering life. He began to write poems in 1842, with the ideal of changing the reality in Hungary. In his early poems, he wrote many bold political poems, satirizing and attacking princes and nobles. In order to change the inequality between the rich and the poor, the poet wrote "What are you eating, earth", which reflected the poet's grief and indignation. In some early lyric poems praising life, sunshine, youth and love, the poet also praised the hut by the Danube, expressed the vagabond feelings in the rough life, and deeply praised the faithful love that could not be exchanged with the whole world as the "beautiful dawn" shining on life.
Based on social injustice, petofi is determined to devote himself to the realistic political struggle and strive for freedom for the motherland and people. 1846, he joined various organizations of radical youth at that time, and led the establishment of a progressive writers' group "Young people wrote many political lyrics". The theme of his poems is to fight for freedom. In one of his poems, the poet shouted "Let the people go to heaven,/Let the nobles go to hell".
1in the autumn of 847, petofi married the girl he loved. During this period, poets often played beautiful melodies. However, he also clearly understood that the harsh reality would make him choose between freedom and love, so he predicted: "Farewell,/my beautiful, young lover,/… my life! /... for the motherland, for you ... ""I just set foot on a bloody battlefield ". If petofi regards his love as the treasure of life, then he knows better that there is a nobler treasure in the world than love, and that is freedom!
Poetry is a poet's weapon for freedom. The poet once wrote this chapter:
Struggle is the most important thing in my life
The best idea,
Heart of freedom
And bloody struggle!
……
If necessary,
Until the end of the world!
For this reason, the poet would rather be a "towering rock/crashing in the valley" than a flower "bitten by a bug" and "slowly withering".
Petofi once said: As a soldier, one should be born for "love" and a person who sings for "hope". It is for this reason that he resolutely left his beloved wife and went straight to the battlefield, holding a halberd in one hand and a pen in the other, and wrote battle songs such as "Battle" and "Army of Eldria". 1July 3, 8491day, at the gunpoint of the Cossack invading army, he died for his country and fulfilled the golden oath he made in his poems such as Freedom and Love.
Petofi's poem Freedom, Love is concise, expressing love but not limited to it. It not only sings the loyalty to love, but also shows the poet's lofty spiritual realm that regards the interests of the motherland and the people above all else. The author embodies heroism in every inch, and creates an image of a capitalized "man" whose dreams and souls are inseparable from freedom, singing for love and going to disaster for the country. This immortal work is not only a household name in Hungary, but also loved by our readers. (Dong Xiaoyu)
