The story of Hawkes' stone
"In the late 1970s, Dai Naidie and I began to translate A Dream of Red Mansions again, which was like realizing a dream. David hawkes, an English friend of mine, is a sinologist. He told me that the name he used to translate the version of A Dream of Red Mansions was Stone. In order to look slightly different from his, I used the title of A Dream of Red Mansions. The English version of A Dream of Red Mansions was published by foreign languages press in three volumes from 1978 to 1980.
