The dispute between Li Bai and Su Shi about "the first scholar": Song Shenzong's final decision is no less than ignorance.

Text/Blue Dream Island Master

Who was the "first gifted scholar" in ancient China, Li Bai in Tang Dynasty or Su Shi in Song Dynasty? I believe different readers will have different answers to this question.

(Li Bai VS Su Shi)

Zhao [xū] replied: "Although Li Bai has Su Shi's talent, he has no knowledge of Su Shi." Although this is only Song Shenzong's personal opinion, it really hits the nail on the head and reveals the essential difference between them-Li Bai is a genius and Su Shi is an all-rounder.

We usually call Li Bai a "poetic immortal" and Su Shi a "literary giant". This is because Li Bai is an unparalleled genius who writes poetry to perfection, while Su Shi is an unparalleled all-rounder who has made great achievements in many fields such as poetry, ci, literature, calligraphy, painting, history and philosophy.

When it comes to writing poetry, no one can compare with Li Bai, including Du Fu and Su Shi. Because Li Bai's poetic talent, domineering and arrogance are all innate talents, which are unparalleled throughout the ages.

But when it comes to writing lyrics, although Su Shi is above Li Bai, he is not invincible in the world and seeks defeat alone. From Li Yu to Liu Yong to Li Qingzhao, there are many people whose writing level is comparable to that of Su Shi. Even in the field of bold and unconstrained ci, there are A Xin ci, which are equally famous with Su Shi.

Moreover, many researchers in later generations believe that Xin Qiji is even above Su Shi in terms of the level of diction and sentence-making. But Su Shi won in realm and mind. In addition, Su Shi is the originator of the school of bold and unconstrained ci, and this pioneering contribution is irreplaceable.

In addition, it must be emphasized that Su Shi's poems were not written by Li Bai, but Li Bai's poems were not written by Su Shi, but there was a great time limit.

(Li Bai)

There are more than 900 poems written by Li Bai (including 10 10 in the Complete Works of Li Bai, including controversial poems), while Su Shi wrote more than 2,700 poems in his life, more than Li Bai.

On the other hand, Su Shi has about 340 ci poems, while Li Bai has only more than 20. This is because Ci rose in the late Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Song Dynasty. Writing ci was not popular in Li Bai's prosperous Tang Dynasty, so Li Bai wrote few ci himself, and even fewer were handed down.

But even so, Bodhisattva Man and Qin Yi 'e are highly respected by later generations, and even known as "the ancestors of one hundred generations of lyrics and songs". (The specific analysis of these two words is discussed in the author's previous article, and interested readers can consult it themselves. )

However, except for poetry, in almost all other fields of literature and art, Su Shi completely defeated Li Bai with absolute superiority.

Prose:

Su Shi, one of the "Eight Masters" in Tang and Song Dynasties, became famous in the first trial with the theory of rewarding loyalty with punishment. Before and after, the name of Chibi Fu was immortal, and few people achieved it in the history of prose. There are 17 pieces of ancient prose written by Su Shi, which is second only to Han Yu's 24 pieces and much larger than Li Bai's 2 pieces. Of course, Li Bai's article is actually good, only slightly inferior to Su Shi's.

Calligraphy:

Su Shi is known as "Su Huang Camouflage", ranking first in "Song Sijia". His calligraphy achievements are not only the best in the Song Dynasty, but also far-reaching in history. His Huangzhou Cold Food Post is known as "the third largest running script in the world", second only to Preface to Lanting written by Wang Xizhi in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and Sacrifice to a Nephew written by Yan Zhenqing in the Tang Dynasty.

Of course, Li Bai's calligraphy is also good. The Upper Column has been handed down from generation to generation and is now in the Palace Museum in Beijing.

Painting:

Su Shi's greatness lies not only in talent, but also in innovation. He is not only the originator of the uninhibited poets, but also the first to put forward the concept of "literati painting", advocating that "poetry and painting are integrated and the art is fresh", which laid a theoretical foundation for later "literati painting".

At the same time, his own painting level is also extremely superb, especially good at painting ink bamboo, dead wood and strange stones. His paintings attach importance to similarity, oppose similarity, and advocate that there is affection outside the painting, and there should be sustenance in the painting. Representative works include Dead Trees and Strange Stones and Xiaoxiang Bamboo Stones.

As for Li Bai, he didn't dabble in painting.

Learning:

Besides, as Song Shenzong said, Su Shi is not only talented, but also learned. He is familiar with classics and has in-depth research on Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Therefore, Su Shi's poems are as numerous and refined as Li Bai's.

To sum up, the author thinks that Li Bai wins in talent, Su Shi wins in realm and knowledge. One is an unprecedented genius, and the other is an all-rounder once in a thousand years, each with a "first place".
