Cold in Spring
Chen Yuyi
It was windy on Baling Day in February, and the spring cold was not over yet.
Begonia does not hesitate to be rouge, independent in the drizzle.
In early spring in February, the earth is already decorated with new flowers and leaves. At this time, what people hope for is that the wind is sunny and the bees and butterflies are swarming, making the spring scenery more intense. But things often go unsatisfactory. If a cold wave comes with wind and rain, "late spring cold" will occur, and these flowers and leaves will be destroyed. Chen Yuyi (1090-1138) fled to Baling (today's Yueyang, Hunan) during the "Jingkang Disaster" in the Northern Song Dynasty. He lived in a small garden and called himself "Yuan Gong". He guarded and cultivated the flowers and trees in the garden. In the harsh spring and cold, he could not help but worry about the fate of the flowers.
"February Baling" specifies the place and time. "The wind is blowing every day", which shows the continuation of the spring cold. Saying "wind" also includes "rain". For the convenience of textual use, the two words "wind and rain" are separated. This and the fourth sentence echo each other. Under the constant attack of wind and rain, the flowers that have already opened will drift away, the buds that have not yet opened will not sprout, and the spring will be desolate. This kind of endless bad weather is a disaster for the new flowers and leaves in spring. "It's over", it's over. "Ti" means fear. "Xieyuan Gong" is an inversion of syntax, which means "to frighten Yuan Gong". Next, I turned my pen and wrote an inspiring scene. Unexpectedly, in this very bad weather, the crabapple flower actually braved the cold and bloomed in the wind and rain, showing a fearless spirit, which shows that the vitality between heaven and earth cannot be killed. of. Begonia has been considered a famous flower since the Tang and Song Dynasties. Because it is very delicate, some people use it to describe the delicacy of women, so the poet uses "rouge color" to describe the bright red flowers. Can such a flower branch withstand the cold wind and rain? It cannot help but be worrying. However, in the rainy and dark scenery, I saw the Begonia flower standing up and independent. Although it was lonely, it was also high-spirited. It was no pity that its "rouge color" would be washed away. The emotions expressed in these two poems are surprise and joy!
Plants and trees have no emotions. Its blooming is not controlled by any thoughts. It can only be given emotions by poets, who believe that it blooms in the cold here and now, showing a strong and upright spirit of self-sacrifice. Thus, the "independent" ignorant plants and trees "in the drizzle" are also personified! These two sentences depict Begonia vigorously, which expresses the poet's own feelings.
The "Jingkang Disaster" indeed caused great changes to the Han people under the rule of the Song Dynasty. Chen Yuyi has a sad and generous feeling while wandering around. Some of his poems passionately praised the nation's war against aggression. Although this poem is written about the natural scenery in the rain, it also reflects the fighting atmosphere of the times.
