Zhou Mi, a native of the Southern Song Dynasty, told an anecdote of Su Dongpo in Volume 20 of his note "The Sound of Reading": Once upon a time, someone threw a poem at Dongpo and asked, "Does this poem have a score?" Po said, "Ten points." He was overjoyed. Po Xu said, "Three points in poetry, seven points in listening." After finishing this anecdote, Zhou Mi commented: "Although this is a joke, Fu Weng (Huang Tingjian) said that' reading from the south window is my voice' is true, and the voice of a good scholar can be heard by himself." Indeed, Su Dongpo in the anecdote just said that the man's poem was not good, but he recited it well. However, it also shows the importance of recitation to poetry.
