This is an autobiographical film. These are all things that really happen to people familiar with the director. Every event in the movie is real. Some people think that this film is tarkovsky's best work, full of the director's personal thoughts on time, history and countryside. A series of plots show feelings from pre-war to post-war and poetically show memories of parents.

Before shooting, Andre Takovski prepared more than 20 different scripts, and finally he was satisfied with what he saw now.
At the beginning of the movie, a phone call came in. Holding the camera, you can see a poster, which is another Takovski film, Andrei Lublev (1969).
