Why can London dialect gradually develop into standard English?

Geoffrey Chaucer was an English poet in14th century, known as the "father of English poetry". He wrote poems in London dialect, and his immortal work Canterbury Tales had a great influence. Then other poets began to write in London dialect, which gradually evolved into written language and later became standard English.
