This poem was written in the seventh year of Tianbao, that is, Du Fu was thirty-six years old. When Du Fu was thirty-five, he came to Chang 'an to look for an opportunity to be an official. That year, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty issued an imperial edict to call all the wise men to Chang 'an for an examination. Du Fu went in high spirits, but failed the exam.
Because Li, the prime minister at that time, was a traitor, he was afraid that these new officials would affect his position. So when I was thinking about Tang Xuanzong's report on exam results, I said four words: "There are no sages in the wild." In other words, talented people have been recruited to the court, and now there are no left-out people. As a result, no one was admitted to the imperial examination.
Du Fu had to stay in Chang 'an because of the failure of the imperial examination. This poem was written against this background.
The title of this poem is Wei Zuocheng's Twenty-two Rhymes. Wei Zuocheng, a native of Wei Ji, was Zuo Cheng at that time and was a senior minister. Zhang is an ancient title of respect for the elderly. This Wei Zuocheng was very kind to Du Fu and recommended Du Fu to the court many times. This poem by Du Fu, on the one hand, confides in him, on the other hand, expresses gratitude to him.
